Matter of Void is a monumental, site-specific public artwork by internationally acclaimed artist Alicja Kwade, curated by Creator Projects. The sculpture is installed at Vagn Ry Nielsens Plads in front of VIA University College in Horsens, one of Denmark’s fastest-growing cities, where education, urban development, and art converge.
Rising twelve meters high, the work consists of six massive stone blocks stacked in a gently rotating formation, each carved as a negative imprint of a stone sphere. Surrounding the tower, six freestanding stone spheres appear scattered across the site—like planets slipped from orbit—creating a dynamic dialogue between gravity, balance, and movement. As visitors move through and around the sculpture, shifting perspectives reveal moments of tension, openness, and stillness.
The materials used in Matter of Void originate from across the globe. Six natural stones—Visconte, Halmsted, Verde, Cara, Alaska Red, and Masi—belonging to the marble, quartz, and granite families, emphasize both geological time and global interconnectedness. The twisting structure of the tower evokes associations with DNA, human creation, and the passage of time, while the scale of the spheres subtly references the human body and classical ideals of proportion.
Both physical and philosophical, Matter of Void explores fundamental questions of existence, matter, and perception. The perforated passages within the stone blocks act as visual portals—inviting viewers to look through the sculpture and reflect on what exists, what is absent, and what remains unknown.
As a permanent installation, the work has become a new landmark for Horsens and a central gathering point on the VIA University College campus. It creates a shared space for contemplation, curiosity, and dialogue, reinforcing the city’s ambition to integrate art, education, and urban life.
The project was realized through close collaboration between the artist, Creator Projects, VIA University College, Horsens Municipality, and a group of public and private foundations, and reflects a long-term commitment to art in the public realm.
Previous projects by Creator Projects at VIA include Daniel Buren’s site-specific commissions, inaugurated in 2021 and fully integrated into the campus architecture. Read more about the project here.
