Aarhus 2020

— Danish School of Media and Journalism DMJX

Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist (b. 1962) has brought vibrant light and video installations to The Danish School of Media and Journalism’s (DMJX) new campus in Aarhus. Her site-specific, permanent multi-channel video installation, Earth Lights and Ping-Pong with the Sun (2020), consists of four coordinated projections combined with a disco ball, lighting system, and curtains to create an immersive experience.

Renowned internationally as a pioneering explorer of moving images, Rist’s work, like journalism’s power with words, inspires new forms of communication. Her installations create otherworldly encounters that invite reflection on the human role as an active, evolving force shaping the world. This commission supports the vision of a dynamic public urban space, fostering a stimulating, social, and innovative learning environment with an international perspective.

The artwork was initiated and curated by Creator Projects and developed in collaboration with design office Kollision as well as Arkitema Architects, who contributed to the architectural and technical integration in the building of the new DMJX campus. The commission has been realised thanks to generous donations from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Obel Family Foundation, the Salling Foundations, the Spar Nord Foundation, Beckett-Fonden, the Danish Arts Foundation and FEAS.

Rist is represented by Hauser & Wirth and has held solo-exhibitions at Guggenheim (New York), MoMA (New York) and Utrecht Centraal Museum. In 2019, she presented a highly acclaimed and widely popular exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
