ETERNAL collects the photographic work of Michael Utzon (b. 1984). The photographs are supplemented with texts by curator Maria Kappel Blegvad (ARoS Aarhus Art Museum), visual artist Nicky Sparre-Ulrich and photographer Keld Helmer-Petersen.
Michael Utzon has always been taking photographs and as a child he spent countless hours in the darkroom, where his grandfather, the groundbreaking Danish photographer Keld Helmer-Petersen, with expert guidance introduced him to photography. During a stay in New York in 2013, Utzon developed his own significant and personal idiom, characterised by organic and colourful images in a tight graphic composition. Utzon’s gaze dwells on everyday objects, which he approaches so closely that they are often left unrecognisable and abstract. The motif recedes in favour of acidulous and confluent colours. The photographs bear witness of Utzon’s unique ability to always see the beauty in life’s abstract and sometimes overlooked structures, and he inspires us to look at our visual surroundings from a new perspective.
